For  most of the people, doing meditation is a bit challenging, not able to remain clam and stable for even 5 miutes and question comes to many, can I meditate during sleep. Now meditation requires a degree of awareness and intention (even during deep meditation) while sleep is a state where awareness fades. 

Seep can be considered as physical + brain recovery

During Sleep 1) The brain clears metabolic waste 2) Memory gets Consolidated 3) Body repairs tissues

Meditation can be considered as active inner conditioning

During Meditation 1) You train attention 2) You observe thoughts instead of reacting 3) Emotional patterns slowly get rewired 4) Stress response reduces while you are aware

So both are equally significant

Sleep = repair the system

Meditation= upgrade how the system works

Both can be considered as a separate in general to keep in it a simple way.

There are few topics like You Nidra where meditation is getting clubbed with Sleep but not sure about the practicality and complexity in doing so unless you are a spiritual practitioner for a very time.
